The Met Gala – one of, if not, the biggest night in fashion. Each year, hundreds of attendees including, A-list celebrities, designers, philanthropists – basically anyone who is anyone – bring their best fashion-forward looks to the red carpet (or should I say pink carpet) to celebrate the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual costume gala. This year was no different. Co-hosted by Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, Serena Williams and Anna Wintour, the Met Gala proved to be nothing less than extraordinary.
The theme: “Camp: Notes on Fashion” meant that if you thought the Met Gala was over the top before, then you were certainly not ready for the looks this year. But, what does “camp” even mean? Well, we’re not talking about campfires and s’mores here. Camp, as intended by curator Andrew Bolton, is an eccentric and eclectic aesthetic. Think theatrical, pastiche and definitely extra.
From pastel hair to sparkles galore, guests brought their fashion A-game when it came to this year’s red carpet looks. So, who reigned supreme and who let “camp” get the best of the them? Keep scrolling to find out.
Best Dressed
Omg. Zendaya. #MetGala pic.twitter.com/Ci0NocDFlZ — E! News (@enews) May 7, 2019
Zendaya ★★★★★ Zendaya came to the Met Gala looking like a real-life Cinderella in this fluorescent gown by Tommy Hilfiger. The best part? Seeing it light up on the pink carpet from the bottom up, just like the movies. She even left her shoe behind as she walked up the stairs, now that’s what I call dedication.
"come on Barbie let’s go party" – Kacey Musgraves https://t.co/I8MWtwSfEV pic.twitter.com/uW5vxOAAYa — E! News (@enews) May 7, 2019
Kacey Musgraves ★★★★★ I am 100% here for this look. Inspired by Barbie, Kacey Musgraves donned a hot pink leather Moschino outfit accompanied by a fur stole and cat-eye sunglasses, which is all we needed and more. Plus, the hair dryer purse? Genius.
Kim Kardashian. #MetGala Wearing Thierry Mugler for Maison @Mugler—The designer's first new look in 20 years. pic.twitter.com/wLhhfP95zf — Complex Style (@ComplexStyle) May 7, 2019
Kim Kardashian West ★★★★★ At first I was a little underwhelmed with Kim’s look, but the more I looked at it, the more I realized how lifelike the crystals looked on her dress. She actually looked like she just got out of the water in this Mugler design. From the wet hair to the dewy makeup, Kim Kardashian West perfectly channeled her inspiration for the night, Sophia Loren.
.@LilyCollins is doing her best Priscilla Presley impression in all white with a brunette bouffant on the #MetGala carpet. https://t.co/SiLur8c0Ne pic.twitter.com/od5biEs9rw — Vogue Runway (@VogueRunway) May 7, 2019
Lily Collins ★★★★★ Bringing out her inner Priscilla Presley, Lily Collins looked radiant in this 1960s-inspired white ruffled dress and train. My favorite part? The butterflies incorporated throughout her bouffant, adding that perfect feminine touch.
.@flo_tweet has arrived at the #MetGala. See more #MetCamp: https://t.co/lRZSGLLg7x pic.twitter.com/kT4G3nRTKA — Vogue Magazine (@voguemagazine) May 6, 2019
Florence Welch ★★★★ Looking like an actual fairy queen, Florence Welch opted for a sheer blue Gucci dress and cape combination for her Met Gala 2019 look. Where can I get one myself?
.@michaelb4jordan’s embellished suit comes with a contrast satin yoke and a crystal-buttoned shirt. See every look so far from the #MetGala red carpet: https://t.co/RfG24yUPqh #MetCamp pic.twitter.com/BpsAEX2ZbR — Vogue Magazine (@voguemagazine) May 6, 2019
Michael B. Jordan ★★★★ Michael B. Jordan looked sleek and sophisticated in this satin and beaded tuxedo from Coach.
.@TaylorMarieHill channels old Hollywood in a petal-pink satin gown, plush feathered boa, and lots of diamonds on the #MetGala red carpet. Keep up with our #MetCamp live updates here: https://t.co/E8mmM4SrDR pic.twitter.com/VxdbvRoKLS — Vogue Runway (@VogueRunway) May 6, 2019
Taylor Hill ★★★★★ Bringing old Hollywood to the Met Gala, Taylor Hill shined in a pale pink satin gown and feathered boa. To top it off, she wore a thick diamond choker proving that diamonds really are a girl’s best friend.
Newlyweds @sophiet and @joejonas coordinated their @LouisVuitton looks on the #MetGala red carpet. See more #MetCamp: https://t.co/r6r06Gqwib pic.twitter.com/tSOGAhIo6n — Vogue Magazine (@voguemagazine) May 7, 2019
Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner ★★★★★ In their first high-profile appearance as a married couple, Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner opted to wear matching ensembles, in which they absolutely killed it!! From Sophie’s glittered slick back hair and teal eyeshadow to Joe’s graphic turtleneck, they exude a sense of calm, cool and collected that many wish they had (aka yours truly).
There's nothing more powerful than (and we cannot stress this enough) Harry Styles. #MetGala https://t.co/CTQ3Lv0aRy pic.twitter.com/csHGiNV1Qq — E! News (@enews) May 6, 2019
Harry Styles ★★★★ The heels, the pussy-bow blouse, the single pearl earring. Upon initial sight of this outfit, I am going to admit, I was slightly disappointed in Mr. Harry Styles. As a big fan of his, I was expecting color, sparkles – everything. However, Styles opted for a more subtle, but still campy, Gucci look. Although it isn’t over the top, he still came dressed to impress.
Lady Gaga just SHUT DOWN the #MetGala pink carpet — with four amazing looks! 🔥🔥🔥 pic.twitter.com/Ei0eYTnaAq — InStyle (@InStyle) May 6, 2019
Lady Gaga ★★★★★ Let’s be honest, would you expect anything less? Lady Gaga wowed the crowd in not one, but four outfits. Putting on a show for guests on the pink carpet, she stripped down from a poofy hot pink gown to a black gown followed by a hot pink column dress and finally, a see-through, sparkly set. In other words? We should all bow down to Lady Gaga.
Anna Wintour has arrived at the 2019 #MetGala. See more from the #MetCamp red carpet: https://t.co/xEcpGmLI7i pic.twitter.com/CP62h0yvyB — Vogue Magazine (@voguemagazine) May 6, 2019
Anna Wintour ★★★★★ Inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on ‘Camp’”, Anna Wintour maintained her fashion icon status in a Chanel couture pink sequined gown and feathered cape.
Kylie and Kendall Jenner shut the #MetGala carpet down. https://t.co/u1idOZtc0x pic.twitter.com/HgZJbiTfnz — E! News (@enews) May 7, 2019
Kylie and Kendall Jenner ★★★★ Although memes have surfaced throughout the Internet regarding these two’s looks (think Hattie and Olive from Ella Enchanted), you have to admit they look drop dead gorgeous in their Versace showgirl-inspired dresses. From the feathers to the beading, Kylie Jenner looked perfect in pastel lilac and Kendall Jenner was fiery in bright orange.
Worst Dressed
Why does @lenadunham's dress say “rubberist,” you ask? @christopherkane’s Fall 2019 collection was inspired by fetishes, and this dress nodded to people with a particular interest in rubber. More #MetCamp: https://t.co/OsnNCcqsZS pic.twitter.com/TZ01t6GdZq — Vogue Magazine (@voguemagazine) May 6, 2019
Lena Dunham ★ There’s making a statement and then there’s this. Actually, I’m not even sure what this is. Lena Dunham and her Girls co-star Jemima Kirke donned pieces from the fetish-inspired Christopher Kane Fall 2019 collection, but I can’t help but question this look every time I see it.
.@Caradelevingne never shies away from a red carpet statement. See more from the #MetGala: https://t.co/GlWIttyGCI #MetCamp pic.twitter.com/2e1qbnaA5L — Vogue Magazine (@voguemagazine) May 7, 2019
Cara Delevigne ★ I get the look she was trying to go for, or at least I am trying to. Instead of being theatrical, Cara Delevigne just looks like a bad rainbow candy strip.
Frank Ocean isn’t taking the black tie dress code too seriously, wearing a nylon @Prada anorak on the #MetGala red carpet. See all our updates live from #MetCamp: https://t.co/rBHi9Lj1fu pic.twitter.com/e1pGCYjl2q — Vogue Magazine (@voguemagazine) May 6, 2019
Frank Ocean ★★ An anorak? To the Met Gala? Really Frank Ocean? Even if it is Prada, this is the MET GALA!! The only way I could see this potentially being a brilliant look is if Ocean intended to be the opposite of “camp” as a way to make a statement. Nonetheless, I would have left the nylon jacket at home.
Emily Blunt delivers another gold moment on the #MetGala red carpet. See more #MetCamp: https://t.co/lpnMuBVjai pic.twitter.com/wgZ5y0R5wv — Vogue Magazine (@voguemagazine) May 6, 2019
Emily Blunt ★★ I don’t know where to begin with this particular look. From the headpiece to the dress, I’m going to be honest and say that Emily Blunt looks more like a Ferrero Rocher wrapper than a golden goddess (sorry not sorry!)
Sorry Hailee, we needed them. #MetGala pic.twitter.com/P4Myk7UwwC — E! News (@enews) May 7, 2019
Hailee Steinfeld ★★ No photos please is right. I really truly believe that this look would have been AMAZING if it weren’t for the words spread across the bottom of this Viktor & Rolf Spring 2019 dress.
Are you sensing a gold theme? @MindyKaling wore a luminous gold sequined gown, dyeing her hair a pale blonde shade to match. See more from the #MetGala red carpet: https://t.co/Zq5WO4bFwS pic.twitter.com/VRHdlDueYV — Vogue Magazine (@voguemagazine) May 6, 2019
Mindy Kaling ★ Although gold seems to have been a trend this year, some of these looks are just not cutting it for me. For example, Mindy Kaling – what are you doing?? The hair, the dress – it’s a no from me. I feel as though if the dress were more flattering on her (i.e. get rid of the piece hanging off her hip) and she opted for a more colorful hair style (think mint or blush) instead of a pale blonde, then this look would not have ended up on the worst dressed list.
Model @AshleyGraham is sporting a custom @Gucci blazer designed in collaboration with Dapper Dan on the #MetGala red carpet. #MetCamp https://t.co/hKqUufmdr7 pic.twitter.com/2UVONYorkd — Vogue Runway (@VogueRunway) May 6, 2019
Ashley Graham ★★ I love Ashley Graham, I really do, but I definitely do not love this look. From the see-through tights scrawled with words allover to the checkered pattern of her Gucci blazer, this look does not do Graham justice.
.@KarlieKloss arrives to the #MetGala red carpet in a gold mini with major puffed sleeves. #MetCamp. https://t.co/6dotOK2PBm pic.twitter.com/WIu3DVUpNU — Vogue Runway (@VogueRunway) May 6, 2019
Karlie Kloss ★★ It’s not that Karlie Kloss doesn’t look good in this gold mini and black puffy sleeve combo, but that’s it? As a supermodel, I would expect a lot more from Kloss. The Met Gala is the one day of the year where you can go above and beyond and frankly, she did not.
That is all from me! Until next year… What were your favorite looks of this year’s Met Gala? Which ones did you hate? Let me know in the comments below!
